Eleven years later, I had the opportunity to make a change, and I jumped on it, finally pursuing my dream of being a therapist. I earned my Master’s of Social Work from UC in 2001, and spent the next three years at Cancer Family Care, counseling cancer patients and their families. I learned so much about the resilience of the human spirit, the beauty in families reconnecting, and the importance of making life fulfilling and meaningful.
I wanted more control over my life and my schedule, so I started my own therapy practice in the summer of 2005, and haven’t looked back. I love counseling couples and individuals who want to improve their relationships. I think that’s where the good stuff in life comes from – our relationships with other people and with ourselves. Having the latest toys and gadgets, the biggest homes, the best of everything can all feel hollow and empty without love, friendship, and family.
My counseling approach focuses on understanding why things are the way they are, looking to my clients’ upbringings and early adult experiences to help fill in the blanks. Then, we take real, effective & practical steps to change what isn’t working. I’m not satisfied until my clients have the lives they envision for themselves, full of joy, laughter, & meaning.
I believe this is the work I was meant to do, and I am energized and thankful every day when I walk into my office. I care very deeply about my clients, and give them my absolute best every session. I am a lucky, lucky girl to be able to do something I love so much and that has such a positive impact on the lives of others!
I’m a member of NASW, ORVCSWS and OASW. I take far more than the required 30 hours of continuing education each two-year period, because I’m always interested in learning new techniques, new skills and new approaches. I take my responsibility to my clients and my profession seriously, but I take myself lightly. I am an easy therapist to work with: I laugh with my clients, I laugh at myself, I quote movies, TV shows and song lyrics. I am chatty and real in sessions; most people think therapy with me feels like a conversation with a trusted friend.
In my off hours, I like to hang out with friends and family, visit my grown sons in California and South Carolina, SCUBA dive, walk my labs, hit the gym for a spinning or yoga class, and read almost anything put in front of me. In the winter, you’ll find me planning trips to sunny climates, and in the summer, you’ll find me heading to the beach as often as I can.
